z53kaft3.jpg (59573 bytes)

LACE Magazine international #53 issue is dedicated to the Royal Wedding of Prince Philip of Belgium with Her Royal Highness Princess of Belgium, Mathilde d’Uedekem d’Acoz, and focuses on the historic Belgian lace worn by the bride.

Background information:

After the death of King Baudoin of Belgium in 1993, the nation was in mourning, because he was deeply loved by the country's entire baby-boom generation. His brother Albert and wife Paola took the throne, and this past December 4, 1999, King Albert II’s oldest son, Prince Philip, married a Belgian-born lady of noble birth.
    Her Royal Highness Princess of Belgium, Mathilde d’Uedekem d’Acoz was born in Uccle, by Brussels, on 20 January1973, on native soil. She is not only very beautiful, but she also speaks fluent Dutch, French, English and Italian. She loves both modern and classical music. In 1995 she established a speech-therapy practice in Brussels. She has traveled to India, Nepal, China, Peru, Bolivia, Mexico and Guatemala. Tennis and swimming are her favorite sports and she also enjoys the outdoors and the beauties of nature. Princess Mathilde and Prince Philip have been deeply in love for four years.
    Their wedding took place in Brussels on December 4, 1999. It was a joyous celebration, the likes of which that nation had not seen in recent memory. Of course, the princess wore a veil of Belgian lace…

What you will find in LMi#53…

A history of that veil, with an in-depth overview of the Brussels Laces in all their aspects and splendor, illustrated with detailed photos of Brussels Lace garments (courtesy of a private collection) that are equivalent to the royal heirloom veil worn by Princess Mathilde at the wedding.

In addition, our readers will receive a lesson in the techniques of Brussels lace, contributed by expert lacemaker Mrs. Ana Isasi Blanco of Florida, charter member of LMi since 1987. Mrs. Blanco herself learned these techniques from the nuns in school during her childhood in Cuba and shares her knowledge graciously.

On page 29 you'll find a Torchon pattern - here is the color code:

z53LMp29.jpg (77798 bytes)

purple = ctc / red = ctct / green = ct / yellow = single thread/picot

But there is more in LMi #53, besides all the above, and amazing photos, we include free lace patterns, valuable information on where to get lace teachers and groups to join in your own neighborhood and more that will be a pleasant surprise when the issue arrives...

#53 is dedicated to the Royal Family of Belgium
