Princess Lace making is a fast and easy technique to create weddingveils, lace handkerchiefs, placemats, tablerunners, curtains, etc., by the application of fine machine-made lace tapes onto cotton tulle.

These designs and its pictures are the property of   L&A.  No part of this page may be copied, printed or reproduced in any form without previous written permission of the publisher.

You'll find all these Princess Lace tapes and tulle at www.lacemaking.com/Ltapes.htm.

Princess Lace is essentially a finished decorated surface of cotton tulle using different kinds of tape. You will become more familiarized with various tapes and their combinations upon viewing different lace pieces.

The key to creating Princess Lace is to start small - expand slowly and let your imagination guide you.  Here, we are going to cultivate a sprout until it grows flowers and develops into a plant.   Later our design  we will resemble bouquet-like arrangements and flowered scrolls decorating larger areas.

Let's start with our sprout (materials needed are tulle, some heavy cotton thread and large Princess Lace leaves)

Princess Lace Heart Design

PL-01.jpg (1836947 bytes)

This fast and easy way to make a large piece of lace is often used in Europe to make wedding veils, wedding dresses, curtains, inserts and other lace decorations.  Once you understand how to work the tapes - using the build-in pulling thread - there is no limit to what you can make using these materials.  There are varies sizes of tapes and a wide assortment of leaves, centers and florets.  You may find and order these items at www.lacemaking.com/Ltapes.htm

The design above is made as follows:

1. Position the flower center on the tulle and attach it with a few stitches (use cotton thread - the tulle and Princess Lace items are 100% cotton).

2. Use a thick size contour thread to outline the branches, starting from the flower center.  Finish with a small knot.

3. To finish the flower in the center: use the Princess tape as shown here:

PL-02.jpg (1367556 bytes)

- cut the edge -  locate the pulling thread inside - pull to make the curve needed - position the curved tape around the flower center - cut off and stitch together

4. Repeat these steps to make the small flower without a center on the right

5. Cut off the rings, and the small and large leaves, and stitch them in position.

6. To make the border: cut the remaining Princess Lace tape in half and start to make the curve (as in 3.) at the end of each tape.  Position the curved tape starting in the upper middle of the heart (the two tapes start here) and attach with pins.  Once you are happy with the shape, cut off the excess tape and stitch at the side of the pulling thread only (note: in the picture above is the Princess tape replaced by a Duchesse tape - same system other design).

7. Once you are finished you may cut away the excess tulle and your heart is completed.

You can build on this experience to create your own designs - the possibilities are unlimited.  All Princess tapes have a pulling thread on one side (Battenberg Lace tapes have pulling threads on both sides).   The Princess Lace is also available in black.  Have fun.
